Are You Aware of What a Medical Transcription is and the 3 Transcription Process?

Medical Transcription (also known as "MT") is a professional career that involves listening to a doctor dictating medical report and accurately transcribing them into a properly formatted and accurate medical document.  The individual who performs medical transcription is called medical transcriptionist.

Medical transcription is the industry that renders doctor dictated reports, procedures, and notes into an electronic or paper format in order to create files representing the treatment history of patients.  Health practitioners dictate what what they have done after performing procedures on patients.

Medical Transcription Process

1.  Use transcribing machines with headset and foot pedal to listen to recordings by physicians and other healthcare professionals dictating a variety of medical reports, such as emergency room visits, diagnostic imaging studies, operations, chart reviews, and final summaries.

2.  Transcribe dictated reports and translate medical jargon and abbreviations into their expanded forms.

3.  Edit as necessary and return reports in either printed or electronic form to the dictator for review and signature, or correction.


Medical transcription is an exciting and evolving profession that requires an individual to be knowledgeable in many areas.  It is a difficult and stressful work but it is also very rewarding.  With significant investment in rducation and experience, the income possibilities can be quite lucrative.
