Two Essential Equipment You Will Need to be an Effective Medical Transcriptionist

In the medical transcription process you will need to use transcribing machines with headset and foot pedal to listen to recordings by physicians and other healthcare professionals dictating a variety of medical reports to be able to transcribe them.   Most of the things needed are pretty basic like a computer (an up-to-date one), keyboard (ergonomic preferred) and headphones but there are two equipment, that would be of most help in transcribing and make you an effective medical transcriptionist, that you may not be familiar with are foot pedals and medical transcription reference materials.

Foot pedal are use to control the dictation. The basic foot pedal allows you to play, stop, rewind, and fast forward the dictation using your feet and keeping your fingers free to type. This will save you time and keep you from having to use the mouse every couple of seconds to start and stop the dictation. It's really easy and basic to learn to use a foot pedal. There are many types of foot pedals and all of them work with different programs including Express Scribe.

practically like having all of the answers you need right in front of you at all times. A  lot of this research can be done through the use of the Internet and other types of research can be done through having the correct medical transcription reference books  at hand such as the ones listed below.

The most important ones to have right away would be:

1.  Stedman's  Medical Dictionary.
2.  Stedman's Abbreviations, Acronyms & Symbols.
3.  Quick Look Drug Book 2011

A medical transcriptionist is an individual 
who performs medical transcription.

The Basics 

Medical transcriptionists must understand basic anatomy and physiology, disease process, laboratory medicine and pharmacology in order to select the appropriate terminology since there are many sound-alike words in the medical  language.

Medical transcriptionists must also have knowledge of medical procedures and a multitude of medical instruments and equipment.

Medical transcriptionists must employ knowledge of English grammar, punctuations and editing on at least a college level in order to properly translate and document patient care records.

Medical transcriptionists must have basic and advanced knowledge in computers and related technologies.

Medical transcriptionists must have basic MS know-how.

Education and Training

To be a medical transcriptionist you need to be at least a high school  graduate with a certified medical transcription training program, usually a 6-month to 2-year certificate, diploma or associate's degree program.  

If you've finished college level, the training usually lasts 3 to 5 months if your course is medically related; 3 to 7 months if non-medical. 

If you've finished your bachelor non-medical degree, the training usually lasts 3 to 5 months .

If you've finished a medical bachelor degree, most of the companies don’t ask for any training.  They just hire you and train you as you go along (so you can skip this one if you’re a medical or medical allied graduate).

Certification

Although certification is not required, some medical transcriptionists choose to become certified (as it can boost their profile). The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity offers two certifications: Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) and Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT). Unfortunately though, these are not offered yet (I believe) in the Philippines.

Although having a medical degree is favored for employment in the medical transcription industry you don’t necessarily need to have one.  As long as you're good, has an open mind and willing to learn, you can still work as a medical transcriptionist and excel at it.

• Recognize inconsistencies within a report and follow up with the healthcare provider to ensure accuracy
• Submit written reports for physicians to approve
• Follow patient confidentiality guidelines and legal documentation requirements

Medical transcriptionists use audio playback equipment, often including a headset and foot pedal—to control the recording playback speed—that are connected to their computer. They use word-processing and other specialized software, as well as medical reference materials as needed.

To do their work, medical transcriptionists must become familiar with medical words, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, pharmacology, and treatment assessments. Their ability to understand and correctly transcribe what the health professional has said is critical to reducing the chance that patients will get ineffective or even harmful treatments. Medical transcription is an exciting and evolving profession that requires an individual to be knowledgeable in many areas.  It is a difficult and stressful work but it is also very rewarding.  With significant investment in rducation and experience, the income possibilities can be quite lucrative.
